Below are the events that have been held to foster more reading by our students. These events are organized by the librarian and reading specialists in each K-3 school.

The reading challenge this year was called "Read S'more Books"! Students were challenged to read 100 books by the last day in February. When the student reached their goal of 100 books, a marshmallow with their name on it was put in their classroom's stick over a campfire. The following slideshows show the kids who reached 100 books posing at a campfire in the library or near their campfire banner posted in the hall.

Students who read 100 books by February 29th for "Read S'more Books" received a food item to make their principal into a human s'more. Third graders started off by smearing marshmallow fluff. Second graders had a spoonful of chocolate spread to add to the fluff. First graders got a baggie with little marshmallows to sprinkle. Kindergarten finished off with pieces of graham crackers that could stick to the marshmallow and chocolate. Students that read 100 books also received a certificate, book mark and Rita's coupon. Dr. Shoemaker, Mr. Santos and Mr. Mudlock were good sports!

CAMP READ-A-LOT
In February KBES held a Camp Read-A-Lot in the evening. Students received a vest (brown paper grocery bag) and could go to different areas to receive badges on their vest. Dr. Riker, our superintendent, and Dr. Shoemaker, our principal, held a sing-a-long. Bushkill Fire Personnel and EMTs along with some boy scouts and teachrs read their favorite books. Other areas included crafts, technology and games. Students were even able to read to therapy dogs! It was a fantastic night!

2015-2016 SCHOOLWIDE READ-INS

LOWER NAZARETH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWIDE READ-IN
Students bring a blanket or beach towel along with a favorite book or books. Students and staff sit in the hallways reading and sharing their favorite book. Some sit silently and read. Others read to each other. There were two schoolwide read-ins. One was in the fall to kick off the reading challenge and another was in February to celebrate the final push to 100 books by February 29th!

WORKING DOGS
On July 22, 2015, the Shafer Library was filled with Seeing Eye Dogs . . .puppies in training! Mrs. Pat Nelson led the group presentation and told the students all about puppy handling which is the first step in training these amazing dogs to become seeing eye dogs. The students watchd the puppies listen to commands and demonstrate differrent skills that they are learning. The students enjoyed spending time reading to the dogs as well. They also participated in some ofun crafts! It was a dog-gone great day in the library!

SCRAPBOOKING
Summer Sensations at Shafer Library kicked off on July 8th! Students and parents enjoyed a story and scrapbooking skills! Mrs. Apruzzi presented how to scrapbook. The students enjoyed creating their own pages!
